The Congregation of the Sisters of the Destitute is founded at Chunangamvely by the Servant of God Fr. Varghese Payappilly on 19th march 1927. The functioning of the Generalate continued here till the division of the congregation into provinces. Thus St. Vincent Region was raised to the status of a province as for the decision of the General synaxis held in January 1985. The Province wasestablished on June 26, 1985 in Kothamangalam Diocese having 181 professed sisters ,15 houses both in Kerala and mission. Mar George Punnakkottil the Bishop of Kothamangalam encouraged and helped the SD to implant herself in areas where her ministry was most needed. We cherish fondly the help rendered and the consolation in times of hardships.
Later in 2000, the province was again divided and Pushpadham Province was formed in the mission with 90 professed sisters in 15 houses. At present St. Vincent Province has 331 professed sisters, 46 houses. In the), Diocesof Kothamangalam (16), Idukki (15, Thamarassery (5),Thalassery (8), Balasore (1) and Bangalore (1).
A Special touch of Christ the Compassionate – to carry on the mission of Christ by becoming a Chanel of compassionate love by personalizing inner attitudes of Christ who revealed the infinite compassion and love of the Father to the poor who are destitute and oppressed
“Just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me”( Mt. 25:40).
To Participate Trinitarian love and give grater glory to God by constantly becoming a holocaust through our configuration with Christ the compassionate and the destitute who became obedient un to death and leading the humanity, especially destitute an the poor to this communion of love.
Sisters of the Destitute commit themselves with a single–minded, irrevocable and firm determination to strive towards this goal. Hence they free themselves from all that prevent them from living the perfect configuration with Christ and manifesting His inner attitudes in the community and in all the humanity especially among those who are destitute and poor, and further more they direct all their wishes, desires, choices, decisions and actions towards the realisation of that goal.

Jesus the compassionate and the destitute gave salvation to the poor by making them experience the Heavenly Father’s divine compassion and love . Here comes a great soul Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Payapilly determined to continue the mission following the inner attitude of the compassionate. The word of God Mt. 25:40 gave him the grace to see the face of Christ in the destitute. The Servant of God Fr. Varghese Payapilly was deeply moved by the deplorable condition of those elderly people who after having spent themselves for their family and society were abandoned in their old age by their on people. Fr. Varghese Payapilly was inspired by Holy Spirit to start a religious congregation that could partake in continuing in the salvific mission of Christ by devotedly serving the poor, the destitute, the aged and forlorn, forsaken by their dear ones, in their on homes or driven to the street. The foundation of the sisters of the destitute took place at chunangamvely, Aluva on 19th march1927 under the pateronage of St. Joseph. The founding of the Home for the Aged is the crowning proof of this.
